Am considering switching this station over to broadband.

I tried the mp3Pro, never went live with it, but I'm not sure it's worth it.

I like the way it sounds at like 64kbps however. I guess I still have the minki station which should stay a bit more old skool and that can use mp3pro as I'd want to do it vip-only. hmmm.

I've been mostly otherwise occupied this past month! So I've been bad with updating. I think I'll be better about it this month! More mixes I want to do... wasnt able to do any in February, but here are playlists for the last bunch of mixes...

...I'm doing, or trying to do, one oldskool show a month. The actual genres are pretty broad... not just rave, not even, although I will get to that! focus is suppsosed to be beats and breaks and I may get sidetracked. First shows were old funk, soul, disco and breaks... with a few new(ish) things thrown in! These are very fun and I really like em... I listen to the mp3s of them all the time!

(I mix on laptop but the source material is vinyl and mostly vintage/original vinyl too.)

random noise: Sundays & Wednesdays @ 10pm NY time. Mixes by me, cool stuff I've found, aleatoric chance music and wierdstuff and freeformsplodgeness. Splodgeness abounds.

m1nx: Thursdays @ 8pm: my mix shows, older ones may play earlier in the nite, newest on late.

...bringing back old skool sounds here.

It was only a matter of time, what with all the old Italo, no-wave, ancient electro and synth and disco I added last year. At least once a month, I'll be playing a long mix show of some old tunes (and some new-ish ones that fit) ...styles will be all over the place. This first show it's all funk/soul/disco/breaks... While I mix on a laptop, all tunes have been sourced from vinyl, and mostly original/vintage vinyl at that, thanks. I think its prooty cool. These tunes will get added to my regular playlist too... I've got some great ones in store for everybody.

I think it will be fun!

Since this station's been on a kind of hiatus since November, i'll now be changing things a bit. More new tracks, even more variety of stuff, Gutter Glamour rockist tracks may reappear weekends, more mash-up shows, other mix shows and some oldskool stuff as well. really! There will be a scary amount of different and new stuff on here.

Also, I'm switching over to mp3Pro, I do believe, once I finish testing it out. Been a long time...

Finally, new mix show on tomorrow nite, maybe 11 or so eastern time, with another set to follow after that perhaps and definitely another on Thursday nite at midnite. These will repeat at earlier times both on regularly scheduled m1nx and Random Noise shows, with playlists posted later.
The music? More Smashbox-type-things going into real elektrik bootiloo grooves... there's some really great stuff coming up and it is not to be missed... really.

Also new stuff in the glitterbox starting this weekend... yay!

Still deciding what to do with this station and me old one, should I continue with this stuff. Other one may be all old skool or, probably this one will be half-and-half whilst the other plays the same stuff but at a higher bitrate... w00t.

Playlist has now been gone through and I've deleted a lot of older and less-favourite songs. I'll be adding lots new stuff, plus a month for now I'll be starting up my old Psychotech station playlist (oldskool rave, acid house, jungle) which will run half the time on this station. I'm thinking 12-12, noon to midnight, New York time. Plus probably most of the weekend. m1nx mix shows will stay in the same timeslot, will probably add a morning timeslot for those as well. Random Noise will stay the same, although for the time being it will mostly repeat mix shows. Unfortunately, Gutter Glamour has gone bye-bye as I can't take care of it very well right now; I think it will be resurrected as a Saturday morning and possibly a noontime weekdays show as well. I think this should work out well.

I had something witty to say for my thread/post title this time, but I forgot. So I will do what I usually do, and rip off rappers ... last week it was Kelis quoting Pet Shop Boys, this week it's Ludacris. And no double D's here, sorry.

Playlists for the last 3 shows....

Redid the first 2 a couple times and I did end up recording them all digital and stuff -- sounds really nice, not sure how much it helps at this bitrate. These are my absolute favourite shows so far, and I'll do more along these lines in the future. Overall, as fun as the first Smashbox installment, less gooofy (one hopes) and more of a nice chillout vibe, even downright lovely at times... thanks to all the original artists and remixers. I enjoyed these shows very much -- I should be sick of hearing this stuff, but I'm not and still like listening to them very much.

Will be taking a break from mix shows -- I've got a lot to do these next two weeks, but I will be back in June with all kinds of good stuff. In the meantime, I'm still adding lots more new stuff to the glitterbox... my daily playlists are changing, updating and getting better and more diverse.

And, erm, I expect I'll be playing all these shows again in the future... stay tuned.

+ An irresistable blend, really. I really like the Streets. Strangely I've been getting back into UK Garage -- I don't even know if he's that anymore -- or eski-beat, grime, whatever the love they call it... The Freddy Kreuger of musical genres -- ever since "Speed Garage" it seems to invite backlash, die, and then come back. Considering investigating it further.
++ FakeID is Lionel's name for his "Electrobollox" versions -- good stuff and that is my favourite Prince remix as well.
+++ GHP mashed "A Day in the Life" with Radiohead and it is one of the saddest songs in the world. (In a good way.) I kind of prefer Soundhog's take as, instead of just leaving them out, he deals with the problematic parts of the Beatles song -- the orchestra tuning up part and the "woke up, fell out of bed" part, both of which were probably Sir Paul's ideas. What Soundhog does with the whole song (plus Mogwai, Kid Loco) is really lovely. And the following song by IDC and Brian Wilson is another fave... very nice... Brian's supposed to be finishing "Smile" this year. I'm there.
++++ This one however is from what might be the album of the year -- The Kleptones' take on the Flaming Lips and hip-hop. Hard to pick a favourite track, but this might be one of them.

Most recent Smashbox mixes on tonite and tomorrow, including a new one or two. These aren't from the first batch of Smashboxes -- while it's probably still too soon to tell, that last installment (1c) seems to be the least popular mix show I've ever done... I feared as much. No, the mixes I'm playing tonite are from Smashbox 2 and I haven't even published playlists for any of them yet. (Done 2 so far.) Really like them; these might just the best shows I've done so far... I think you might agree, my listeners usually do. Sound is more laid-back and groovy -- I'd describe it as largely more mashed and chilled in left field.

Will be cancelling Wednesday and Sunday Gutter Glamour shows cuz noone's listening and I'm getting a bit more listeners on my regular Glitterbox selection. Saturday shows will continue, of course. I don't normally do mix shows on Sunday nites, but it is a pretty good nite for them, isn't it? Hmmm.

Anyway new mashed-up-mucked-up mix o'stuff tonite... taking things in a slightly different direction, like a choose-your-own-adventure book. Think 'ardcore, eventually anyway, happy hardcore, jungle and erm, even more hardcore. I like hardcore! Um, and ok... a teensy bit of trance... but it will work, I promise. May be cheesy but, like Mr. Kite, a good time will be had by all.

Masters (or something) of nervous robot pop get the electroid treatment by Matmos. Newish favourite. I really like this one. An older track "The Fake" (Zombie Nation remix) was pretty popular on my station last year and probably still is.

3. I-f - Secret Desire - I-f ep (Viewlexx)
I've been playing this one for awhile... ep is very recommended for electro fans. I like "Us and Ours and You and Yours" best, and pretty much everything on here. It does include a short version of "Space Invaders" although I liked the original Interdimensional Transmissions 12" better for that one -- and maybe people are all sick of that tune anyway. (I'm not, since I don't play it too often. And it remains one of the most popular tunes on my station.)

Yay! My station got nominated for Best Dance/Electronica station under 10k TLH (or somefin like that) on Live365. Pretty cool, huh.... If you're a preferred member or a broadcaster, dont forget to vote for me. The "broadcaster you most want to go on a date with" should not be me, but rather Red101 or Housemusic101, depending.

I forgot, but my station's 3 genres (as listed by Live365) have become Electro, Experimental and Punk -- which is pretty descriptive of what I play and where I wanna go. There's no choice for "Disco" and I'm afraid it would give people the wrong idea. I used to list under "Techno" but that's such a broad category as it is used on Live365, it's become rather worthless. "Punk" is cool as there are no choices for post-punk and no wave, and it also signals that I play rock 'n' roll sometimes, too. (All day Saturdays and Sundays). Electro, Experimental and Punk spells out "EEP!" which is pretty cool. Or if you choose to have the letter X stand for Experimental, it becomes "EXP", which can stand for Experimental itself. Or for the Ford EXP, a (probably crappy) little car from the 80s.

One of my most favourite tracks from ATOC's "A Touch of Class Sucks!" collection, a 2-record set that got a lot of play on my station last year. I think the British would say it got caned. This tracks sounds like... hmmm... imagine if, in the early-mid-80's, the BeeGees teamed up with Herbie Hancock and Bill Laswell to make breakdance tracks. Yeah, it kinda sounds like that.

3. Mr Fingers - Can You Feel It? (Original)
Ahh... yeah. Early house gem that's never been surpassed, and one of the most beautiful tracks ever. The organ riffs, in particular, are heartbreaking. It's lo-fi -- when I first got it, I was checking my levels and my needles and stuff -- but so fuzzy, warm and soft, you can't resist. And there's no improving on it. I like the vocal version and remixes a lot, too, but I chose the original cuz it's so sweet.

Dang, you'd think I'd be becoming a classic rave broadcast already. (Yeah, like I used to do, and may soon) Next thing you know, I'll be playing Joey Beltram and even "Dominator" next. Oops, yeah....

Of course, if you have a problem with gay marriage, I'd be 99.9% percent sure that you have a problem with gay people. Britney Spears has done more harm to the so-called "institution of marriage" than have 3000+ people in San Francisco, and nobody's proposed a constitutional admendment against her. Of course, the harm she did was negligible, and I'm not sure if I'd have a problem with an anti-Britney admendment. Thankfully, she's getting old, and unlike Madonna, noone's gonna give an isht about Britney when she's 40.

Hard to blieve, but as of last week, Meow/Glitterbox will have been on the air for a year already. Yay! Won't do any new mix shows this week, but will have a ton of new stuff next, starting with loads of new Glitterbox and Gutter Glamour trax. Mixes of new stuff, plus the end of Best of Glitterbox shows... it'll probably go all month. Random Noise will be on next week -- Wednesdays from 8 til midnite. Made up musical genres, continued...

Casioclash: Casiocore, except you're playing phoney 80's music. Actually, I busted stuff like this out all the time when I was little. To dress Casioclash, you kinda dress electroclash, except you get all your clothes from thrift shops--very bad 80's fashion preferably, or not really 80's at all. Your clothes should smell funny too. Truly trendy people will look down on Casioclash fans, which it will be really fun to be one for awhile, until Casioclash gets written up in some Random Trendy Fashion Magazine and then everyone will want to do it.

IDEBM: IDM meets EBM. Either a totally new freaky awesome blend... OR the ultimate in poser music.

Dumb & Ass: Drum & bass reduced to its stupidest and most basic elements. Endlessly looped tick-tock breaks, bassburps and hoovers. Actually that sounds a bit like some of my attempts at drum & bass... except mine are officially jungle since I use amens, and I hope most of what I do is a bit better than D&A Or maybe not. And what about T&A? Similar, but has tits.

Pants: Pants is as trance was... I know that this requires you to look back (at least) ten years ago, a time when most trance fans were in diapers -- that is, if they'd been concieved at all. Anyway Pants is as trance was, before goa started all sounding the same, before all those commercial crap vocal tunes, before Robert Miles. Pants is not, however, afraid to be a wee bit lazy and cheesy at times, so long as cheesiness is not the main order of the day. Think burrito rather than quesadilla. The important thing to realize about Pants is that it never takes itself too seriously. (See "progressive") It is simply euphoric party music -- better than hardhouse, hardtrance, new hardcore/freeform/whatever -- and you don't have to feel embarassed dancing to it. Actually, you should be proud to dance to Pants. I think it could actually be pretty big.

Regressive: The opposite of progressive. Simplistic versions of early rave music programmed and played on mod trackers. (No cheating and using a "groovebox", however hooking up a couple old Roland drumboxes and a sampler works) The cool thing about Regressive is that, as each stylistic iteration runs its course, the musical styles get older and older. One moment bad jungle (crossover with D&A?) will be the big thing, next it will be simplistic hardcore. Which will give way to bad acid house, and so on. Eventually, regressive will turn to electro, disco or Paradise Garage grooves -- at which point it may seem like it's actually going forward. Or it will warp all the way back to anthropologically correct Stone Age tribal music. But probably it would become big with hippies then, so it will have to die. And Nu-Regressive will be born, regressing from a new point in the not-so-distant past/future.

Shallow House: The opposite of deep house. Only the most painfully obvious diva vocals over the most annoyingly played-out commercial house grooves. Actually that sounds like a lot of house already.

Crisco: Crunky disco

Frisco: Fruity disco. Either made in Fruity Loops, or just really queer. Or both. Probably big at 1015 Folsom already.

Harddubbagcore: I made this one up over a year ago. I forget what the hell it was already. I know I replaced it with "Kittycore" which stands for whatever I want it to be; at the time Kittycore meant some kind of acidelectrorave mishmosh with some decent IDM thrown in. Actually, think Luke Slater's 2002 remix of Egyptian Empire's "The Horn Track."

Minuetek: Techno relieved of all African elements and "soul." The ultimate in Euro music. Eventually it will be played in waltz time. And electronic musical devices will be replaced by Baroque-era string and wind instruments. The ultimate in party music for the powdered wig and breeches set. Don't forget fans, petticoats and bustles for the ladies. And faux beauty marks for both. Only big in the European Union. Except for the British, who will have to be different and make up their own version, called UK-something-or-other.

NY Storage Shed: Across-the-pond version of UK Storage Shed. Which I DID NOT make up. (I saw it in a jokey list of genres in a record store.) I'm not sure what it is, apart from remembering one of the Chemical Bothers' stories about playing with a TB-303 in a storage shed in the English countryside when he was younger. I think I will make some NY Storage Shed.

Cannot sleep... Anyway, more new stuff on Gutter Glamour (it's on two days, now) and on Glitterbox. I also need to type up 4 additional playlists, which is a new record for procrastination on my part. Glitterbox -- if there were visuals, I could have Blitterbox or Jitterbox -- has gotten some newish tunes I should added already, and also some 80's stuff. Different 80's stuff, yo... Good stuff. My selections for Random Noise are shaping up nicely -- generative music, noise, microsoundish experiments, VGM, wierd stuff I can't fit in normally. Expect field recordings too, although I will have to dig through my minidiscs to find some, so those will probably wait. Too bad it's only 4 hours It will repeat Sundays, after Gutter Glamour.

And John Kerry is alright with me. Better than the alternatives.

I am a total nerd. When I say the sound is awesome, I mean it's true to the way that 80's videogames sounded... by todays standards it's crap but it sounds good as crap. Never mind. Although Taito games on Saturn had a very good old school sound... Bubble Bobble in particular is the equal of the Midway Collection. Taito also had beautiful music on its more advanced Saturn games -- Galactic Attack/Layer Section 1 as well as the Raystorm sequels on PS1 are particularly nice. They were scored by Zuntata. (Capcom's GigaWing on Dreamcast sounds rather similar.) Although respect has to be given to Treasure's Radiant Silvergun. Saturn tended to sound very nice, particularly with old school (coded? tracked?) music. Even the CD player was cool. I wish Sega, since they were out of that business would make their old systems public domain/open source or something. There's always Linux on Dreamcast.

Posted this before... ok, once in awhile, I post some totally irrelvant crap here:

Check this one out...

I picked up this excellent collection for Playstation 2 -- "Midway Arcade Treasures" -- HIGHLY recommended. Probably available for other systems as well. Bit more generous than Namco too. Includes games not just from Midway, but from Williams and later-period Atari.

Is worth it alone for these two:

Spy Hunter (Controls are bit complicated, but they were in the arcade. The arcade machine still beats the PS2 controller, maybe using a PS2 wheel would help.)
Marble Madness (yay! Actually there were decent home versions but it's nice to have the arcade version finally. Love the music.)

These are also definitely worth having:
Robotron 2084 (yes! The arcade machine had probably the best control scheme ever and it rocks again with the PS2 analog twinsticks)
Smash TV (Basically the same game--different premise and even more intense and bloody.)
Defender/Defender II (aka Stargate. PS2 controller shines here.)
Sinistar (yes! With the sassy talking skull... you know it. It still rocks. BEWARE. I LIVE.)

Lost gems:
Joust/Joust 2 (Actually everyone loves Joust with good reason. The sequel didn’t do very well. I don’t remember it at all. But Joust II is excellent and totally worth having.)
Blaster (I have a dim memory of this game existing, and I wondered what the H* became of it. It’s a rather impressive forward-scrolling first person space shooter. Still quite fun with rather trippy graphics and enjoyable for its sheer bit-ness.)

These are quite good and some people will definitely remember them fondly:

SPLAT! (Kinda like Food Fight but possibly crappier. Can be kinda fun though. SPLAT! was only a prototype and was never released. Until now.)
Super Sprint (top-down crar racing game on a circular track. Would be fun maybe if you could control the damn car.)

Stuff I would love to have seen:
Tempest (Done to death on Atari compilations already and the excellent PS1 updates can still be found used, but it would have been nice to see it here.)
Crystal Castles (This game rules)
Bezerk (Was a Stern game though.)
Wizard of Wor
Gorf (Gorf does include a part based on Namco's Galaxian, so putting the full arcade version here might have been impossible.)
Moon Patrol (And why not?)

Most of the games are a total blast and they seem to be total arcade emulations. (PS2 typically takes too long to load them.) The sound is awesome; I haven’t heard it this good on the computer or on consoles before. Hearing the primitive synth sounds (even for then) and sound effects are a hoot as is any game that includes voice samples or speech synthesis. There’s extra history lessons and interviews as well. They are somewhat incomplete but what there is can be quite good and fun to read and watch. Williams games have the most extensive documentation, as they own everyone else, and they seem to have recycled some of it from older Williams collections. (One time, Atari Jaguar is mentioned as an extant system.) They do interview one of the creators of Spy Hunter, which is pretty interesting. The interviews with Williams’ Eugene Jarvis, et al. rule. The one on Blaster is probably my favourite; lots of funny facts on that game.

Updates to kitster (kitster.moonfruit.com)... pretty happy there, although I might re-record last 2 (jungle/ambient) tunes. Will redo kitster logo text -- it looks that way since the original font wouldn't vectorize right -- that's what I get for using Adobe LiveMotion! Back to Flash on my old Mac -- never got a PC version of it. Will probably redo meo3 pages next.

I think I caused some kind of schedulling glitch on my station Wednesday night as when I checked in on it today (Thursday) it seemed to be running old mix shows over and over. whoops! Station, after slumping for a long time, is getting a few more listeners. While I'm pretty skint, it seems I can afford to run it at the current level and afford to bring back my old (old skool) station as well... Meow/Glitterbox will have been on the air for a year next month. Best of shows will probably finish up while I do some new shows of techno, electro and disco.

Random Noise will include more wierdness than my usual broadcast, like the wierder stuff and wierder still, stuff I wouldn't let myself play normally. Will also be truly freeform.

However, given his performance --which makes fine musical material--I'm no longer certain he'd be better than Bush. Even if Dubya fell off the wagon. Which is a scarey thought. OK, if the Dems nominate Dean, which I don't think is likely right now, I might vote for him over Bush. But I might have to think about it.

That Google ad links to something that's outdated or just wrong. I didn't see any "techno" or "trance" clothing for sale there -- and damnit, I wanted to "feel the power of the cone watch." What the hell is that?

I checked out the guys who were selling "electroclash" clothing however, and I ordered a Chicks on Speed t-shirt with fishnet sleeves. No, not really, I didn't.

Hey, how about this: Casioclash? And instead of buying new-faux-80s clothing this time around, buy gross real 80s clothes at thrift shops or any thrift shop clothes for that matter, so long as they smell kinda funky.

Oh yeah, I've been considering adding more post-punk-type selections, apart from what I've already added which is mainly funk (A Certain Ratio, etc), Erase Errata and Joy Division. lemme know if this is a good idea or not. I'd love to add more synth selections, so long as I can find good ones and I'll be definitely adding more electro (and I mean electro electro) as well as techno techno and microhouse. Oh and "idm". So maybe I will end up with a big mess.

And, yeah it worked in digital. Laptop NOT CDs -- CDJs are geigh, yeah if you DJ well on them fine, but they're still geigh. I'm sort of unsure about using a computer for my shows -- like everything in (electronic) music is going computer, you can soon buy an ersatz little Korg MS-20, plug it into your pc (or Mac I guess) and control the MS-20 softsynth you've installed on your hard drive. I've been making more computer muzik, at the same time I'm attached to my hardware instruments like my Yamaha sequencers and my 202 and MS2000. (That last one and the Yamahas are digital anyway and if Yamaha made a laptop, I'd buy it.)

Anyway, I'll be doing more of these.

And Howard Dean sucks. I'm tired of him. But unless another Democrat comes on stronger, he is better than the alternative which is George W Bush. I had a dream where I was working on the Dean campaign (which I don't and would avoid doing so) and we were all in this little apartment which we shared with the cast of Law and Order who were somehow working on this really complicated case at the same time and I started working for them instead. It was weird. Eventually Jerry Orbach took everything over.

1.15: OK, mix shows are on! I couldn't do it last night, but will be doing a new one tonite around 11pm. Trying to go digital again, my first laptop effort (Halloweenie show) didn't quite come out, but I think I've got it right this time. For the next few weeks I'll be doing the Best of Glitterbox 2003 shows, based on your votes and my favourites and maybe some good stuff I didn't get to get on this year. First one will be a bit rockist (again?) -- but funk, electro, synth, disco, etc. will follow... and mash-ups! yay.

My personal favourites of 2003, which was actually quite a good year for music, if nothing else...

Luomo: The Present Lover (Forcetracks 3xlp)
Vladislav Delay's side project that snuck up on me and became the record of the year. Verrry nice sound. Lovely lush house music that’s sometimes deliciously trashy, often kind of morose. Enveloping grooves that I so love getting lost in. Songs can be pretty long, but don't feel it. In fact, I didn't want to leave this record when it ended.

Matthew Dear: Leave Luck to Heaven (Spectral Sound/Ghostly International 2xlp)
Brilliant techno-by-way-of-microhouse excursion with some real tunes hidden along the way and enough warm grooves to make it worth the trip. Balances pop sensibilities and the "I" in IDM in a way that should leave other artists jealous and leaves us all hope for the future of electronic music.

Adult.: Anxiety Always (Ersatz Audio 2xlp)
This lp found them, as others did in 2003 with varying degrees of success, embracing c.1979 post-punk and making it work with their existing Detroit-electro-pop sound, which is all the better for it. Adult. write real songs and their at-first-cute-now-increasingly-a-bit-scarey neuroses run deep. While their lyrics can still be a bit glib at times, they are quite good and better than just about everyone who graduated (or didn't) from the school of stylish irony.

Yunx: Customer Service (Yunx Recordings/www.baked-goods.com ep)
Delicious almagamam of Detroitish -- although they're British -- techno and IDM. Beautiful. Outclasses many other heretofore better-known artistes. Yunx put out a lot of stuff this year, and while this is all I have, I will buy it all.

Invasion Planete Phonogrammes 4th Anniversary (Invasion Planete lp)
Dark, minimal, pervy, but also often comfortably retro-synthy electro from France that (thankfully) doesn't play by the rules. Invasion Planete artists got a lot of play this first year on the glitterbox. This record marked their 4th anniversary (duh), and, dammit, this should have been the sound of the past 4 years.

Millsart: Every Dog has its Day (Axis lps)
Of all the releases Jeff Mills put out this year, including the nearly as good "Medium", these were my favourites. (Though I don't have them all yet.) I tend to prefer his more ambient, mellow grooves and here he delivered. So warm and dare-I-say sunny from the-rarely-described-as-"sunny" Detroit.

New York Noise: Dance Music from the New York Underground 1978-1982 (Soul Jazz 2xlp)
Captures that brief, glorious time in NY musical history where underground rock met underground dance and what resulted was music of rarely equalled eclectitude (I just made up a word!) and complexity. Tends more to the rock, post-punk "No Wave" and flat out strange (meaning I like it).

The Soft Pink Truth: Acting Crazy (Soundslike ep)
This Matmos side project brought us quirkily retro (and stylish) queer-themed electroid-idm-a bit-disco-by-way-of-microhouse that ranges from the decidedly tetchy to the sinfully soulful. This one sported brilliant remixes by the likes of Safety Scissors and along with the "Do You Party?" lp, I played A LOT of Soft Pink Truth this year.

Legowelt: Classics 1998-2003 (Bunker/Clone 2xlp)
These freaks almost single-handedly brought back Italodisco, one of glitterbox's most beloved forms of music and I love them for it. I play them pretty heavily on the radio, although I got this retrospective collection too late in the year to add it.

Icebreaker International & Manual: Into Forever (NATOarts/Morr Music lp)
Breathtakingly deep, deceptively simple synth-and-guitar ambience, as expansive and beautiful as space.

Other stuff: Kitsune Love compilation, Ghostly in general, Kompakt in general, Manitoba, Beige, Benge, Akufen, Erase Errata, The Chap, A Touch of Class, Electric 6, all the remixers and mash-up artists.

The most popular artists overall seem to be I-f, Dr. Shingo, DMX Krew, Adult. and Porn.darstellar. Of course I play a lot of all these artists, so that has something to do with it. This top 50 might be a bit incomplete, as Meow/Glitterbox has only been on the air since March 2003. Not every track here came out in 2003, all were, of course added to my playlist then. Next year’s chart (touch wood) will probably exclude old tunes (except for 70s-90s) and any tunes that charted this year.

I’ve tried to identify the record label but don’t have them all written down yet. While nearly all of what I play on my station is vinyl, I think pretty much all of it can also be found on CD, often on compilations. Of course you should buy everything I play. I look forward to what goodies 2004 will bring.

Awhile back I got this bright idea to do a bunch of musical projects in different styles under different names. The idea came from Orbital, who'd mentioned wanting to do the same thing. So I'm putting a lot of this stuff up on this site, which doesn't really look a lot like Napster (which looks more like iTunes, actually). The mp3s here are all relatively low-bit (32kbps) but they're been tweeked heavily, so they sound great. Lemme know if you'd like higher-res copies and I can hook you up.

Miyuki Cat... I like drum & bass, jungle, etc... and am old enough to remember when it was new. I haven't really followed a lot of the newer releases recently, but I still collect old skool or anything made before '96, maybe '97. I like playing with drum & bass, making my own. I find it pretty involving, maybe I get too obssesssively into it, but I enjoy it a lot. Tunes here go from atmospheric to glitchy to old skool jungle and ersatz hardcore. Actually, I like glitching out on beats a lot. These are made without a computer, although I can't say I won't be using one in the future, for now it's all hardware. Yamaha RS7000 as the main box -- some tunes are nothing but, although I'll sample other things. QY70 as a portable composing tool that often finds its way into the final mix... if it's good enough for Freezepop.... Synthesizers used are the Yamaha DX200 and AN200, Korg MS2000 (like in MOG, used a lot), Korg DW8000 (my melancholy baby) and Roland MC-202. More tunes to come.

MOG, or MOG & GOG is kinda minimal, abstract, whatever. These tunes were made with a PC, a Korg MS2000 & ES-1, plus a Yamaha RS7000. The MS2000 is used the most and it's one of my favourite synths. RS7000 isn't used very much, most of the sequencing is PC. They're recorded live onto minidisc (I know its lower-fi, but tis way cool) and later edited... right now they're edited pretty lightely.

While I'm kinda sorta on vacation, my station will see some new updates this week and next. I'll be trying to keep my playlists fresh and will be adding more new tunes. Added 3 new drum & bass tunes to the Silent G show. I've played around with d'n'b before and now I'm getting more into making my own. It's either glitchy stuff, ersatz hardcore, atmospherics... some of these I want to remix as downtempo or electro or breakbeat thingies. Drum & bass is pretty involved to me, at least I tend to get pretty involved innit, so all these tunes are kinda works in progress. My website is giving me troubles right now, so I havent been able to get them on Kitster just yet.

Dance music that falls through the cracks: electro, Italo disco, synth, post-punk, funk, old NYC favourites anywhere from the Mudd Club to the Paradise Garage, 80s obscurities, idm, Detroit techno and other techno techno, acid, minimal, microhouse, Chicago house, bedroom bleeps, mash-ups and loads more.

It's NOT the same old "dance" or "electronic" selections. Of course, when I play 8ties stuff, it's not the same old 8ties tunes everyone was already sick of by 1985. It IS quirky, new, and different, often obscure, always interesting and fun. I play whatever it is I'm feeling. Unless I'm being slow, I play a lot of new stuff before anybody. It ranges from music for dancing to certifiable chillage and points inbetween; it's a great station for home, work or wherever. Playlists are carefully selected and sound quality is way better than it should be at this bitrate.

m1nx: every week, Wednesday at midnight EST I'll play a mix of new tracks. Which will get added to my playlist. And more. The Wednesday shows will repeat on Thursdays @ 10pm EST.

Silent G: Monday nights I play my own music for two hours -- tends to be more ambient-idm -- check my schedule for playtime. These tunes are also available online.

I'm starting to like Bill Laswell a lot. this seems to have been a one-off project feat Afrika Bambaataa and John Lydon (when he was arty and still relevant, b4 he went back to being Johnny Rotten. These days he's Roger Daltrey.) With the music of Laswell's band Material with Laswell rockin the bass and DMX and P-funk man Bernie Worrell on the space synth. Great tune. These two, first from the excellent Disco Nouveau series on Ghostly International, which I've been playing a lot for awhile now, the second from the third EP from Radius Records always remind me of Miami Vice. Or at least Grand Theft Auto: Vice City.

Le Syndicat Electronique: Plastic to Plastic
Porn.darsteller: Slave Machine
These two are from Invasion Planete records from France. I play as much of their stuff as I can. Excellent underground underrated undersung electro. Dark, edgy, often perverse. These two are older, but the new stuff I play is excellent too.

Drexciya: Drexcyen Star Chamber
Can't recommend Drexciya enough. One of my most favourite tunes from him/them and probably one of the last. From an excellent ep out on Clone records last year.

All old tunes (7ties, 8ties) from some recent compilations. Bush Tetras from "Rough Trade Shops Post Punk 01", ESG and Lizzy Mercier Descloux from "New York Noise" (Soul Jazz) which also includes Bush Tetras and a bunch of other great NYC bands from 1978-1982. Echowest are from "New Deutsch" (Gigolo) -- obscure old dark synth and electro-punk from Germany -- I've been playing this one a good bit. Material are from "More G.D.M. Vol. 4" on Tigersushi, flip of that record is an excellent old house track from Terrence Parker.

Adult.: Glue Your Eyelids Together

Erase Errata: Marathon (Adult. Remix)
Probably my two favourite Adult. tunes, until they make some more. Dig that Erase Errata remix too.

Lime: Angel Eyes
Along with ESG's "Moody", one of the 8ties tunes here. Lime have to have been one of the highlights of early 80's Italo/synth disco. This track is from 1983 and prefigures dance music from later in that decade like Erasure and also retro artists of today -- check my favourite "Disco Nouveau" (Ghostly International), and Legowelt in particular. It also contains one of the greatest 4-finger synth riffs of the 8ties and might be my favourite from Lime. I'll be playing more of these artists.

Klein & MBO: Dirty Talk (A Touch of Class Re-edit)
Scissor Sisters: Comfortably Numb (Dub)
I've been playing a lot of A Touch of Class, who can possibly redeem NYC from the stylistic excesses of the past few years. Or maybe they're excessivly stylish, but their tunes are good. Check out their A Touch of Class Sucks! compilation from their own label for a selection of their tunes, productions and remixes. The first one here is a re-edit of Klein and MBO's classic "Dirty Talk" that still manages to sound vintage 80's, yet improves on the original version. The second tune is the Pink Floyd tune and it sounds exactly like the Bee Gees. If the Bee Gees rocked. Makes you wonder why the Brothers Gibb never tried this one.

The Bloods: Button Up
More from "New York Noise." I think this was their only single. Great one.

Playgroup: Hooked on U
From "Kitsune Love" multi-12" compilation which features Lacquer and Shakedown, among others. There's a CD, too, now. I think it has more songs on it.

Giorgio Moroder: Palm Springs Drive
From "American Gigolo" soundtrack. Basically instrumental version of Blondie's "Call Me" which kicks it off.

James Cotton: I Seek
From the State of the Union ep on Spectral / Ghostly International. It also features tunes from Matthew Dear, Flexitone and Osborne.

Keine Ahnung: Plastik
One more from "New Deutsch." Maybe my favourite track.

Blondie: Atomic
I heart Blondie! From my favourite record by them, "Eat to the Beat." "Parallel Lines" is also excellent, but I like this one a little more.

From their "Customer Service" ep, probably one of the best records I've bought all year. They have an album and some new ones, too, but I don't have 'em. Yet. Yunx is good.

The Soft Pink Truth: Satie (Grey Corduroy Suit) (Herbert's Walk Free Mix)
I've been playing a lot of Soft Pink Truth for a while. I heart him/her/it/them... actually it's really Drew Daniel bka Matmos. This is probably my absolute favourite, from the "Acting Crazy" ep -- I got a bubblegum pink vinyl one!

Dinosaur L: Clean on Your Bean #1
Loose Joints: Shoot the Pump
Dinosaur L was an Arthur Russell project including members of Ingram. He was also behind Loose Joints (see next track) among other things and is sadly no longer with us. Yeah, I may be getting a bit rare groove-y here in the future. This track come from "New York Noise" and is actually the Francois Kevorkian remix. Feel it and be groovy.

Inhumanz: Forget me Frontin' (Pharrell vs Patrice Rushen)
Another one from those wicked folks who gave us "50 Inch Nails".

Pluton and the Humanoids: World Invaders
Sounds a bit like I-f "Space Invaders are Smoking Grass" only a bit more disco? This is from the 8ties and the original. Massive tune. From Unclassics #2 on Environ.

Hi Fi Serious: Because (A Touch of Class Dub)
Sounds familiar too. Cuz it's the Beatles song!

Ulysses: But I'm Trying ft. Dei (Club Mix)
Second selection from the recent ep of the same name by longtime glitterbox fave.

Luomo: Shelter
Second selection from their "The Present Lover" lp, possibly the record of the year. Cover makes it look like electroclash-by-numbers, but it's actually really lovely lush house music. Very nice sound. Sometimes deliciously trashy, often kind of morose. I like it a lot.

Aural Exciters: Spooks in Space (Discomix)
Wierd one this, just re-released on ZE records. Produced by Bob Blank, mixed up by Tom Savarese and featuring the talents of, among others, James Chance (of Contortions/Blacks fame!), glitterbox fave Lizzy Mercier Descloux, and August Darnell (aka Kid Creole). Trashy disco tune from their "Emile Night Rate" ep, cheeky title, no? (pun not intended. Oh, OK, it was. Does that Aural Exciter have Big Bottom?) Dig the spooky cover, too! The rest of the record is more end-of-the-7ties NY wierdness, which will ensure that more of it will enter steady rotation here.

The Universal Robot Band: Barely Breaking Even
(also reference made to Eastside Connection's "You're So Right for Me", Pat Lundy's "Work Song", and Suzy Q's "Get on Up and Do It Again")
Aw, nice one! From, like the Pat Lundy and Eastside Connection tunes, Dimitri from Paris' "Disco Forever" collection from a few years back. On the BBE label (wonder where they got their name from?) Real Paradise Garage sound, to my ears anyway. Along with that next tune, by Suzy Q, on the Mantronix collection on Soul Jazz ("...you're so sleazy, when you tease me.") Think both of these have to be going into rotation.

Grace Jones: Comme un Oiseau qui s'Envole
Grace Jones: La Vie en Rose
These last two are faves from one of my most favourite singers. More downtempo, if they can be called that. The second one is the Edith Piaf song. Too pretty!

Two from him, like I-f. "Haunted House" is a Disco Nouveau track, like I-f's "Holographic Voice." "Goblin 101" is a bit older, 1999, and is probably the spoookiest song ever made! Really.

11.06.03:

Joy Division: Shadowplay
ESG: UFO
This track and the Joy Division track before it share the same producer! Martin Hannett. Who's become one of my favourites from the post-punk years. ESG, as the "South Bronx Story" (Soul Jazz) collection tells us, played both The Factory and The Paradise Garage. And shared a bill with The Clash and Grandmaster Flash. It also tells us that "UFO" was the most sampled track in the early days of hip-hop. ESG are still together and I really like them.

Judas Priest: Living After Midnight
Second track I've played in a week from their butt-rock masterpiece "British Steel". It's not the only album I have by them too. hehe. Their old CDs, being 1980s Columbia releases, are mastered like crap and aren't loud at all. Buy the vinyl or the new remastered Priest CDs which have extra tunes on 'em! I have both and the extra stuff is worth it.

The Pop Group: She is Beyond Good and Evil
Like the Gang of Four tune, from the Soul Jazz collection "In the Beginning There Was Rhythm" -- excellent collection of funky post-punk. A Certain Ratio, Cabaret Voltaire, Throbbing Gristle, The Human League, The Pop Group, Gang of Four, The Slits, 23 Skidoo (still putting out great records! or have recently), This Heat. More from this in the future.

11.13.03:

Orbital: Satan (Intro)
Just the intro, the rest was an otherwise rather lame attempt at industrial, from their mostly excellent first album. (the green one.) This intro, so far as I know, first appeared on a Butthole Surfers record, from which Orbital nicked it. It also appears on one by The Red Hot Chili Peppers, who credited the Surfers on it. It's pretty funny.

Dirty Mary: Drinkin & Drivin
"Kinda like third grade, play Pole Position!!" haha! I almost played the similarly-themed Black Flag song at this point, but didn't. I love Dirty Mary and this tune appears on the New York City Rock n Roll compilation. On Radical Records and compiled by Steven Blush, it features Sex Slaves, Queen V, Detox Darlings, Skum, The Compulsions, Joker Five Speed, Slunt (yay! I love Slunt), Banana Fish Zero, Firegods, Pisser, Dirty Mary, Bantam, The Drive, Go to Town, Pretty Suicide, Apocalypstik, Grounded, Supervillan, The Nolan Gate, This, The Slags, and Starr... whew! It is probably the greatest rock lp out all year ...F* Fischerspooner and the Strokes, this is the real sound of NYC ...or should be. Just buy it. Goto www.newyorkcityrocknroll.com ...More on it later....

Erase Errata: Ease on over
Another one from their excellent "At Crystal Palace" lp on Troublemanunlimited records.

Gang of Four: I Found that Essence Rare
Like a couple other songs, Bush Tetras "Too Many Creeps" and The Futureheads "Robot", from the Rough Trade Shops Post Punk 01 compilation. Actually, I only have the 4-song vinyl ep, the 44-track double CD is out now and has a hellacious amount of post-punk tunes on it, old and new. Futureheads are actually a new band... even if they sound 1979, or just like the Mekons at various stages of their career.

Wolf Eyes & Black Dice: Side B
Entire 1-track B-side of collaborative ep from these two well-connected new kings of noise bands. Inside picture shows them amongst piles of electronic toys. cool!
(by the way, there's probably something wrong with somebody that plays this and Acid Mothers Temple after it, in a show that also includes the "Magic Stroke" mash-up. Or else I'm a genius. Hm, not as likely.)

Sonic Boom/Spectrum: Indian Summer
1/2 of Spacemen 3, which makes him a Spaceman 1.5 ...actually there were 2 key Spacemen in the end, and while the other one went on to do great things as Spiritualized, I've always been a bit partial to Sonic Boom's work. This comes from the Sympathy for the Record Industry compilation "Their Sympathetic Majesties Request Vol. 2" which came out this year. Great stuff, could be the record of the year even if it's a compilation of late-early 90s music. Too many good bands on here, I've also played songs by The Humpers, D-Generation, The Muffs and the Friggs on my show. And any record that has Wreckless Eric singing about Joe Meek is automatically irressistable. One of the best looking record jackets ever with cool art and photos, dig the Blythe doll and the tribute to Brian Jones, who remains my favourite Rolling Stone. Yes, I know. That's why.

Manitoba: Seaweed
Manitoba: I've Lived on a Dirt Road All My Life
I've been playing Dan Snaith's work as Manitoba for a while but have been itching for an excuse to play the more psychedelic-rock tunes for nearly as long. There ya go.

John Cameron Mitchell & Stephen Trask: Milford Lake
From the "Wig in a Box" CD which features covers of songs from "Hedwig and the Angry Inch" by a variety of people and a couple new songs, another by Robyn Hitchcock and this one by the Hedwig originators... and probably my favourite. Great CD.

The Human League: Being Boiled
From the "In the Beginning There Was Rhythm" compilation, which informs us that this one one of the very first all electronic records released in the UK, along with the Normal's "Warm Leatherette." I did know that this was from before the members of Heaven 17 split the League, whilst Phil Oakey got together a new lineup that delivered all the pop hits we loved from the early 80s. And I played this after Candy Flip -- this time, I did play "Strawberry Fields", the second Beatles tune ever played here.

New Order: Your Silent Face
"You've caught me at a bad time, so why don't you p1ss off?" One of my most favourite songs from New Order and still holds up after all these years.

Magazine: A Song From Under the Floorboards
Second song I've played from Magazine's excellent "The Correct Use of Soap" lp which was produced by Martin Hannett. Members of Magazine included Howard Devoto (post-Buzzcocks) and Barry Adamson and they have to be oneof my favourite bands.

Beige: The Great Krautrock Swindle
I know I played this one before, but I love this tune so much. Great title, too.

Three of my most favourite Blondie songs, from, respectively, the "Parallel Lines", "Plastic Letters" and "Eat to the Beat" lps.

Helen Love: Shifty Disco Girl
From her "Love and Glitter, Hot Days and Muzik" lp ...can't resist the title, but why there's happy hardcore (rave, not punk) on it, I don't know. (Worth it too for the duet with Joey Ramone which should have been on his solo lp.) This song has some of the funniest, most brilliant snarky lines innit, like "she'll dance to anything but St. Etienne" and "she looks like Marc Bolan on a bad hair day." And thats "SHIFTY Disco Girl" with a F. It's British.

Suicide King: She's Fast
From the NYC Suicide King, not the other one. One of the best bands ever from here. Comes from their CD on Intensive Scare records. This is GOOD stuff.

Detox Darlings: 7 Songs in the Jukebox
Along with Sex Slaves, more from "New York City Rock n Roll". It's kinda the second coming of NYC rock. Or, rather the fifth or seventh coming. This compilation kinda reminds me of "NYC SCUM Rock: Live at CBGB's" which came out on ROIR over a decade ago. Sound quality's better, since this one's not live. Gina (from Lunachicks, now of Bantam) appears on both records; however, I think the Lunachicks were about ten years old then! There is not a bad song/band here and it's probably the r'n'r record of the year. Irrelevant Village Voice critic Robert Christgau hated it, which you know means it has to be excellent. I like it a lot, too cuz a lot of these bands are female or female-fronted and they all rock. All these guys played parties hosted by Stephen Blush @ Don Hill's, which is the kind of bar I would own if I owned one. Love Blush's liner notes, which include an opinionated, brilliantly snarky history of New York rock. I like that he mentions the late Johnny Heff (a real American hero) of The Bullys. And the Toilet Boys, even if he describes them as a "gay punk version of hair metal." Which is actually kinda accurate, come to think of it. Anyway, this record might be the definition of "gutter glamour" and I love this kinda stuff, along with everything else.

Gore Gore Girls: Up all Night
The cover of this lp looks just like an Adult. record. That's cuz the photography is by Nicola Kuperis. Of Adult. Both bands are from Detroit. Other than that I don't think there's any connection.

Me First and the Gimme Gimmes: Eleanor
Hey, that's "London Calling"! Me First invented the mash-up! Or at least the rock mash-up, mash-ups were probably invented by Grandmaster Flash or Cas.

Dead Boys: Not Anymore / A'int Nothin' to Do (medley)
"Hey Cheetah! Yeah, Stiv." I love the Dead Boys.

Ramones: Do You Remember Rock 'n' Roll Radio?
"Do you remember Murray the K?" Um, no. I think Phil Spector produced this one sometime after he tortured John Lennon and way before he (allegedly) killed the Barbarian Queen.

The Breeders: Wicked Little Town (Hedwig Version)
Another favourite from "Wig in a Box." Apart from the 2 I played, I liked Frank Black and Polyphonic Spree and Yoko Ono's tunes best. And Rufus Wainwright's, although I havent been able to get into his music at all. Proceeds go the Hetrick-Martin Institute/Harvey Milk School, the place for gay kids in NYC.

Lou Reed: Coney Island Baby
Throughout his long career, Lou Reed has often proved as foolish as he is brilliant, sometimes all at once. The "Coney Island Baby" is largely free of the former, apart from the song where he (literally) proclaims himself "God's Gift to Women". And oh yeah, he's dressed like a [i][b]mime [/b][/i]on the cover. I love this lp, and especially the closing, title track. Which, for what it's worth, closed last week's show.

And the rock selections, and loads more of them, will continue on my new show Gutter Glamour, all day Saturdays from now on.
